Last night at Gossip was not what we expected.  It will, however, be another one of the stories about "those crazy few weeks driving across BC as part of the QU team".  It is hard to believe that it has only been a month. We certainly have had more than our fair share of memorable moments along the way, and for a lot of those we have you to thank.

As I mentioned in my previous Blog, the Quitters Unite website will remain as a forum for smokers and non smokers alike to share their info, tips and tricks.  You will also be able to vote for your favourite pics and stories until the end of the month.  There are some great ones out there, so be sure to vote for the stories and photos that you feel are most deserving of some prizes.  If you are someone that has a story to tell, perhaps something that will inspire or help smokers quit, then don't forget to share it.  Although I might not be eligible to win any of the prizes, I thought it would be hypocritical of me to not share my story with you. You can find it here. It was super easy, and only took a few minutes to enter the contest.

Well, I suppose that is that... Once again a big thanks to all of you who stopped by our booth. Be sure to stay in touch with us on Twitter and Facebook, and perhaps we will see you next time.  This is the Veteran aka Lodewyk, signing off...

With the road trip slowly drawing to a close the QU team made the most of their last weekend on the road.  Ahhhh, Halloween…

A late night was followed by an early morning trip over to UBC Okanagan.  Luckily for us the students here in Kelowna couldn’t have been more pleasant, or helpful.  Thanks to them we were able to set a new record for number of interactions at our booth in one day.  Not too bad… for a team that was still a little rough around the edges from the night before.

It is hard to believe that tomorrow the team will be heading back from whence they came.  Yes, it is back to Vancouver, where we will finish up our tour with a visit to UBC on Thursday and "Gossip" on Friday.  Although the roadies will be calling it quits soon enough, the QU website will still be able to provide future nonsmokers with the tips and tools they need to break the habit.   Soon it will be time for us Roadies to hand the reigns over to you.  Use this website to spread the word and share your story.  Help others accomplish what could be one of the most difficult, but also one of the most important, things they will ever do. QUITTTERS UNITE!!!

Achy Breaky Halloween

Achy Breaky Halloween

by The Veteran  |  October 29, 2010 - 7:33pm |  0 Comments

Its just about Halloween, and the QU team will be celebrating it "Country Style" at Rose's Pub here in beautiful Kelowna. Having spent quite a few years living in Edmonton, AB, I know that cowboys tend to take their cigarettes seriously. They work hard and play hard and like to have a cigarette precariously dangling from their bottom lip while they do either one. Make no mistake about it, smoking is scary stuff - just ask the original Marlboro Man who died as a result of lung cancer.

There are loads of scary facts and figures that I have unearthed as part of the Random Smoking Facts from the Web that I have "tweeted" on our QU twitter page these last few weeks. Although these facts are scarier than any ghosts or goblin that you will be running into over the Halloween weekend, this website is not about convincing smokers to kick the habit - it is about (ex)smokers helping smokers quit.  Who better to give advice on how to quit than someone who has already done so - and for us to be able to do this we NEED YOU!!!.  If you have successfully quit, or now someone that has, check out the "Share your story" contest.  You will be helping others, and potentially helping yourself to some cool prizes.  Don't delay, ENTER TODAY!!!

UPDATE: Just got back from Rose's Pub here in Kelowna, and it was not what I expected at all.  The played some good danceable tunes  and there were lots of people in costume (Mario was definitely a favourite).  The team had a blast. Check it out!

The Canucks, an Axe, and Head to Toe Spandex - What a Day!

The Canucks, an Axe, and Head to Toe Spandex - What a Day!

Now that midterms are over for most students, it is time for students to look towards their future. Yes, that’s right, I am talking about Halloween, and at the Quitters Unite booth Halloween comes early! Meet our prop stand. Here we have everything to meet your dress-up needs. Are you looking for a Fireman’s cap, a Bedazzled Zoro mask, or our very popular Oversized Fists? Look no further. Dozens of students at UNBC discovered the joys of our prop stand, and the icing on the cake is that one of these lucky individuals is guaranteed to receive their very own iPad! Not bad for just taking a picture, eh? Some UNBC students even came prepared with their very own props, and as you can see, this group took our photo contest to a whole new level.

Yes, the contest sure is heating up, but just remember that the iPads are regional, which means that those of you that will be stopping by our booth in Kamloops and Kelowna will be starting out with a clean slate. Tis the season for dressing up, so get creative and show us what stuff you’re made of. Did you miss the Quitter’s crew when they came to your town? Or perhaps we never made it over to your neck of the woods? Don’t you worry. Although you can ONLY enter the photo contest by coming to visit us at the QU booth, we still want to hear from you. Share your story with us and you could be walking away with up to $500 in gift certificates to Future Shop, Sports Chek, and Save on Foods. Not too shabby!

The QU team tackles Nanaimo!

The QU team tackles Nanaimo!

by The Veteran  |  October 20, 2010 - 9:44am |  0 Comments

Students at Vancouver Island University had a difficult decision to make yesterday. Is it better to go solo? Or is more really merrier? The advantage of getting a big group together to pose for our photo contest is that there are more people generating votes, and therefore a better chance of winning… But who’s going to keep the MacBook or the iPad if you win…? It really is a tough decision, but one thing is for sure, IF YOU MISS THE CREW WHEN THEY ARE IN TOWN, THEN YOU MISS YOUR CHANCE TO WIN!!! I’m serious… we were in Nanaimo for just about 40 hrs. Just enough time to swing by the Palace Hotel and witness some expert, next level “So You Think You Can Dance” type dancing, and then make a stop at VIU to spread the word - and sample the TASTIEST CAFETERIA FOOD EVER. And then POW–we’re gone… Look out Prince George here we come!!!

PS: Uploaded a couple of pics from Nanaimo on our Facebook page. Check them out here

Our first trip to the Bar!

Our first trip to the Bar!

by The Veteran  |  October 15, 2010 - 10:36am |  1 Comments

Tonight we are heading over to the Upstairs Cabaret here in Victoria, and I can't be more excited!!! A lot of the students at SFU and UVic this week have had some midterm blinders on. BUT TODAY IS FRIDAY! Time to forget about methods of parameter variation, polymers, distillation design or Einstein's principle of Blah-di-Blah, and just unwind a bit. So get your gear on, and your hair did, and we will see you at the bar!

SFU

Congratulations to the SFU students who were able to make time between midterms and stop by our Quitters Unite booth. Those of you who posed for the photo contest are well on your way to winning either a MacBook or one of five iPads. The great thing about this contest is that it is not down to some random luck of the draw, but it is the person that gets the most votes that will win. All it takes is determination, and maybe a little creativity, and you stand a good chance of taking the lead. We are giving away two iPads for residents of the Lower Mainland, which means that it is very likely that one of the “Quiiters” from SFU might be walking away with a shiny new iPad. Why not head over to the “Photo Contest Gallery” and vote for the person that you think is most deserving.
Next stop Victoria….Lookout UVIC, here we come!
