I also talked to my friends at Quitnow.ca who provided some more advice John. Here's what they said:
Smoking is an addiction. There is the physical addiction that will be most evident in the first week of your quit. At this time you can replace smoking with the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy like the gum or patch which is free if you phone HealthLinkBC at 8-1-1. It will really help diminish the symptoms.
After about 10 days the psychological addiction to smoking will become obvious. Smoking has become part of your routine so there will things within your daily life and environment that will trigger a craving to smoke…when you get into your car, having a cup of coffee, meeting up with friends that smoke...etc. Adjusting your routine for a while will help you avoid these triggers. Starting something new that uses your hands can be really helpful. What about Sudoko puzzles, learning to play guitar, squeezing a stress ball, rubbing a smooth stone? I'm sure you can think of something that fits with your personality.

What's important is to find something to keep your hands and/or mouth busy. Some people say chewing on a straw or a toothpick has helped them. Let us know what works for you.
